If your horse drags behind you when you lead it, here’s a simple fix, something you can do that’s effortless (nearly), pain-free, and sure to build a stronger bond as you strengthen respect.
Horses That Pull Back When Led
What I'd Do
Okay, here’s a simple tip because I want you to keep in mind that “you ride the horse you lead.”
When you’re leading your horse and he’s dragging behind, he’s signalling to you that… those are the best conditions you’re going to get, right? You’re just hanging out; it’s a beautiful day, and yet he’s dragging behind you. What’s going to happen when you get out on the trail and you start riding and something scares your horse? The answer is, he’s going to put a hundred times as much pressure on those reins. He’s going to take off and he’s going to head to the hills. So, one of the things that you can do to help yourself out later as a rider is that when you’re… when you’re leading your horse and the horse lags behind you, automatically turn to the tail and get the rear end moving again.
Your thoughts need to turn to getting the rear end to speed up… not by trying to pull the horse forward. And one thing that you can do to make that happen is that you can immediately try to get his nose to touch his rear end. So, let’s say you’re walking forward and you feel the horse kind of sull up behind you, without missing a beat then, you need to immediately turn and pull that nose towards that rear end and keep him moving. Simply keep him out of the habit of slowing down by concentrating and keeping the horse always moving at the same speed.
